Why Having a Primary Care Provider Is Important

Taking care of your health starts with having a trusted primary care provider (PCP). Finding and regularly seeing a PCP can make it easier to manage your overall health, stay healthy, and get the care you need.

What Is a Primary Care Provider?

Your PCP is often the first person you contact when you have a health concern. Over time, they learn about your health history, medications, and personal health goals. This relationship helps them provide care that fits your needs.

A primary care doctor can help with:

  • Routine checkups and preventive care
  • Vaccinations and health screenings
  • Treatment for common illnesses and minor injuries
  • Managing ongoing conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or high blood pressure
  • Referrals to specialists when needed

What Is Preventive Care?

One of the biggest benefits of having a PCP is access to preventive care. Regular checkups, screenings, and health guidance can help catch potential problems early, when treatment may be easier and more effective, and manage chronic conditions more effectively.

Preventive care may include:

  • Blood pressure or cholesterol checks
  • Cancer screenings
  • Immunizations
  • Nutrition and lifestyle guidance

Supporting Whole-Person Health

Good health is about more than just physical care. That’s why whole-person health is an important part of many primary care practices.

Some primary care offices provide integrated behavioral health care, connecting mental health and physical health services. By addressing the full picture of a person’s health, whole-person care can help improve health outcomes and make it easier for you to get the right support.

Your care team may help with:

  • Mental health screenings
  • Support for stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Referrals to behavioral health specialists
  • Coordinated care between physical and behavioral health providers

At Rocky Mountain Health Plans, we make whole-person care a priority. We help connect Coloradans to the care they need, including mental health services and substance use disorder treatment, and we make recurring investments that allow many of the PCPs we work with to hire additional behavioral health staff.
