Understanding Qualifying Life Events

When life changes, it’s important to make sure you consider how that change affects your health insurance. Maybe you recently had a baby or were married. Did you recently lose coverage elsewhere? Find out when you can make changes to your plan.

What is a Qualifying Life Event?

There are two time frames during which you can enroll in an RMHP individual and family plan:

  1. The annual Open Enrollment Period. For 2022 coverage, the Open Enrollment Period has ended.
  2. A Special Enrollment Period (SEP). You may be eligible to apply for health insurance coverage if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). Examples of QLEs include getting married, having a child, or losing other coverage. There are specific timelines in which you need to apply after experiencing a QLE, so it’s important to keep these in mind. The below guidelines list QLEs, as well as the timelines to apply, effective dates of coverage, and required documentation.

In order for your application to be accepted, you must submit proof of your eligibility for a Special Enrollment Period. Applications will not be considered complete without proper documentation.

If you are enrolled or are enrolling in a plan through Connect for Health Colorado, additional QLEs may apply, and the effective dates of coverage may vary from those listed above.
