6 Outdoor Activities for Memorial Day Weekend in Colorado

Six Outdoor Activities for Memorial Day Weekend in Colorado

What to Do This Memorial Day Weekend in Colorado

Who doesn’t want to get outside over Memorial Day weekend? It’s the perfect kickstart to a nature-filled summer in Colorful Colorado! If you’re looking for some outdoor inspiration to help you plan your own long weekend, consider giving some of these fun activities a go over the holiday. From hiking to biking to baseball, there’s something for everyone.

1. The season’s first camping trip

Unless you’re winter camping aficionado, Memorial Day weekend is likely the first time in the year when you’re ready to pitch your tent underneath the stars. You could visit one of the best spots for camping in Colorado, or choose a wonderful spot that’s perfect for the entire family. When planning just remember that the snow and cold temperatures tend to stick around at higher elevations in the mountains. This early in the season you may want to stay low, unless you have enough cold weather gear to stay comfortable.

2. Dust off your hiking boots

Now that summer is on it’s way it’s time to get those hiking boots out of winter storage. Trails at lower elevations should already be snow-free, but you might be surprised to find that some mountain trails are already clear enough. Plus, early season hiking gives you plenty of time to prep for that first 14er attempt.

3. Explore wine country

Colorado is actually home to some excellent vineyards, and exploring the Western Slope’s wine country is a great way to beat the crowds along the Front Range. Consider making a road trip out to Palisade where you can explore some delightful wineries. And, as you’d expect in Colorado, there are plenty of other outdoor activities in the area to satisfy your taste for adventure.

4. Head to the park for some slacklining in the sun

Slacklining is an excellent way to spend a sunny day at the park (if you aren’t familiar with slacklining, this guide should help.) All you need is a slackline, two strong trees, and a willingness to stumble around a bit while working on your balance. Don’t forget to pack a healthy picnic — slacklining is tricky, and you’re bound to work up an appetite.

5. Watch the Rockies play ball

You don’t have to break a sweat to enjoy some time outside. Baseball games are a fun summer tradition, and Rockies fans are in luck this Memorial Day weekend. For 2017’s season, you can catch games against the St. Louis Cardinals and the Seattle Mariners throughout the long weekend.

6. Go for a bike ride

If you took a break from cycling this winter it’s time to check your tire pressure and get ready to ride. While you’re at it, why not use the long weekend to try something new on two wheels? Mountain bikers can take to the roads to see how they like it, road bikers could hit the trails to get a taste for mountain biking, or you could give a new route a whirl. Whatever you to do get outside this Memorial Day weekend, time spent outdoors is always time well spent!
