7 Habits To Nix For A Healthier Lifestyle

If You Want to be Healthier, Stop Doing These 7 Things

There are tons of small habits that we engage in every day, and some of them are harmful to our health. From choosing soda instead of water to oversleeping, here are some bad habits you should cut to start living a healthier lifestyle.

1. Sitting down all day

From organ damage to bad posture it’s clear that sitting for extended periods isn’t great for your overall health. Sitting down for most of the day is one of the first habits you should cut to lead a healthier lifestyle. You might even consider investing in a standing desk, or another office solution that allows you to move more and sit less.

2. Drinking juices and sodas to hydrate

Do you tend to reach for a soda or fruit juice when you’re thirsty? Well, it’s time to nix that bad health habit. These drinks tend to be full of unnecessary sugars, and even the diet varieties aren’t as good for you as good old-fashioned water. Every single cell in your body needs water to function, so swap that soda for H20 and your body will thank you.

3. Skipping workouts for a Netflix binge

We’re all guilty of choosing a good TV binge over a sweat session, but if you’re regularly skipping workouts for the couch it’s time to get serious about exercise. You don’t need a fancy gym or tons of equipment, either. Set up a simple at-home gym or try some exercises that can easily be done outdoors.

4. Filling your diet with junk food

Take an honest look at your diet — what foods are you eating most often? If the answer is “sweets, chips, and other processed foods,” then it’s time for a diet refresh. Aim to fill your plate with whole foods, like fruits, veggies, lean protein, and whole grains. Meal prepping is an excellent way to keep your diet healthy. Try using one of these meal planning apps to make the process easier on yourself.

5. Not understanding your health insurance

If you have a habit of ignoring the specifics in your health insurance plan you may want to reconsider. Understanding your coverage is incredibly important, and you might even find that your policy covers more than you originally thought. Plus, spring is the perfect time to get your doctor’s appointments, checkups, and other yearly health maintenance tasks taken care of.

6. Getting a bad sunburn every summer

Now that summer is on it’s way and sunny skies are in the forecast it’s time to think about a seasonal habit that can have a huge negative impact on your health: sunburns. Skin cancer is on the rise, but an ounce of sunburn prevention is worth a pound of cure.

7. Oversleeping and under-sleeping regularly

Many of us don’t get enough sleep, especially during the busy workweek. And oversleeping is just as much of a problem. In fact, both of these opposing sleep schedules are harmful. Not getting enough sleep can cause major issues like an increased risk for stroke, heart disease, and other dangerous conditions, and oversleeping severely messes with your body’s natural, internal clock. Everyone requires different amounts of sleep to function optimally. Determine how much sleep you need and work hard at sticking to that schedule.
