By planning out what you intend to make and eat throughout the week you can mindfully control what you consume, make healthier decisions, reduce waste, limit trips to the grocery store, try new recipes, and more.

1.  MyFitnessPal, iOS and Android

MyFitnessPal is a longtime favorite app when it comes to tracking food intake, and it’s proof that you don’t always need the fanciest tools to stick to your goals. Track all of your food by searching their extensive database, or scan the barcodes of the foods you’re eating. You can create and save recipes, too. If you like to track your macronutrient intake (macronutrients are carbs, fat, and protein) you can also adjust your daily food diary to easily help you meet those goals.

2.  Love Food Hate Waste, iOS and Android

Not sure how to use leftover ingredients in your next meal? Let this app help you out! Input leftover meals and ingredients and then let the app give you some new suggestions. It’s a great way to reduce and/or eliminate wasting food, which is good news for your wallet and for the planet. And, it’s free.

3.  Food on the Table, iOS and Android

With this app you don’t even have to scour the internet searching for recipes to try. You choose your food preferences and dietary restrictions and the app suggests new recipes for you each week. You’ll get a grocery list and recipe instructions, and you can even find deals based on your location. Plus, it’s completely free.

4.  AllRecipes Dinner Spinner, iOS and Android

AllRecipes.com is one of the best recipe resources available online, and you can access their comprehensive and free recipe database on the go. There are a number of categories to browse that are sorted by cooking time and dietary restrictions, and you can craft your weekly meal plan from there. If you want to print your plan just hop on the website via a computer.

5.  Evernote Food, iOS and Android

If you love using the free tool Evernote to organize notes, then you’ll love Evernote Food just as much. Collect recipes and store food photos so that you can recreate them at home. It even integrates restaurant meals, allowing you to stay on track even when you aren’t cooking for yourself.

6. Pepperplate, iOS and Android

This freebie is a perennial fan favorite in the world of meal planning apps. You can save and organize recipes that you find on the app along with recipes from other sources. From there, the app helps you plan your meals based on the recipes you have saved. There’s also a feature for saving your grocery list. When it’s time to cook the app guides you through the entire recipe.

7. Cooksmarts, website

This last one isn’t an app, per se, but it’s one of the most comprehensive meal planning tools available online. You’ll have to visit the website to use it, and it will cost you $72 per year, but you just might find the cost entirely worthwhile (you can also get three meal plans for free to try it out before committing.) The site wants to help you learn how to cook comfortably and give you new recipes to try, regardless of your dietary needs and preferences. Each week you’ll get four new recipes, a grocery list, recipe instructions, and videos. If saving time on your meal prep is a priority, this is a great solution.
