Aches and pains are a part of life, and very little is more frustrating than going to the doctor only to be told, “Go back home, nothing is seriously wrong and there’s nothing to do.”
But some pains should NEVER be ignored. They might be totally unproblematic, but if you are having a serious episode, minutes can make a huge difference! These are pains that can be signs of life-threatening conditions.
A terrible, intense headache: Classified as “the worst headache of your life”. This can be a sign of something as serious as a brain aneurysm or tumor. Never, ever ignore it. Go to the ER immediately.
Chest pain or intense pressure: Heart attacks are often described as feeling extreme pressure, not just extreme pain. If you feel like an elephant is sitting on your chest, or having chest pain, call 911 immediately.
Severe stomach pain: This is a very common sign of an inflamed or ruptured appendix. It could also be intestinal blockages, ulcers, gallbladder problems, or another serious issue that requires treatment.
Leg pain or swelling, especially in the calf: Blood clots in the legs can be very painful or cause swelling, and they are extremely dangerous for both the leg and because the clots can break free and travel to the lungs or brain, cause potentially fatal complications. Get medical attention immediately if you have leg swelling or pain.
If you have any of these pains, seek medical care immediately! Always seek help if you’re concerned or confused about anything. Stay safe, stay well.
