April is National Donate Life Month!
Transplantation is a remarkable medical feat, an inspiring success story in medicine. However, it also depends on the ongoing generosity of donors and their families.
As of today, there are more than 120,000 men, women and children awaiting an organ transplant in the United States. For most, a transplant is literally the difference between life and death.
A few facts on becoming a donor, to get you started:
- Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race, or medical history.
- All major religions in the United States support organ, eye and tissue donation and see it as the final act of love and generosity toward others.
- Some donations, such as kidney or liver, can be done with living donors who survive and thrive after the donation.
- There is no cost to the donor or their family for organ or tissue donation.
