The snow is coming, so the sunscreen is put away, right? Wrong!

With over 300 days of sun in Colorado, temperature is not indication of the need for sun protection.

It’s just as important to practice good sun protection in the winter as it is in the summer. Outdoor enthusiasts love Colorado’s glorious mountain climate, yet many forget the importance of protecting our skin year-round, even on the coldest winter days.

Skiers, snowboarders, even kids who are sledding and tubing, are exposed to high levels of UV radiation throughout the winter. The altitude plays a part: UV exposure increases 4 to 5 percent with every 1,000 feet above sea level. But that’s not all: snow reflects up to 80% of those same rays! That means that anyone enjoying the wintery outdoors is exposed to most of those dangerous rays twice!

Here are simple winter sunscreen tips to keep you and your family covered this winter:

1)      Liberally apply a broad spectrum sunblock (30 SPF or higher) to all exposed skin, every two hours. Use at least a teaspoon on your face.

2)      Wear lip balm with SPF 15 or higher and reapply frequently.

3)      Keep your head covered with a hat (and a helmet if you’re going downhill)!

4)      When skiing, use a ski mask to limit the sun’s exposure to your face and protect against wind and bitter cold.

5)      Always wear protective sunglasses or goggles with 99% or greater UV protection cause.
