Healthy Holiday Food for Great Celebrating!

It seems like food is everywhere during this time of year. Perhaps you’re worrying a bit about your focus on eating right.

Worry not – by knowing which healthy holiday foods to look for (and which to look out for), you can keep your health and waistline on track!

These foods are some of the best for fighting diseases and keeping yourself healthy. Even better: you can often find variations of them in the treats at holiday parties. We don’t suggest you overindulge on the baked goods, but looking out for some of these nutrition-packed ingredients (and getting plenty of good options outside of the party scene) will make your holidays even merrier.

  1. Figs. Turns out “bring us some figgy pudding!” might be great advice! These fruits are high in fiber and calcium, so they’re a great way to satisfy that sweet tooth.
  2. Fresh cranberries: These tartly sweet fruits are loaded with flavonols and anthocyanins that help fight cholesterol. So pass the cranberry sauce, look for cranberries added to meat dishes, even indulge in a slice of cranberry pie.
  3. Orange and orange pith: From vitamin C, to tons of fiber and antioxidants, this refreshing citrus fruit is a great addition to your winter food indulgences.
  4. Kiwis: These little green fruits are full of antioxidants that support eye health, as well as vitamins C and E that can help prevent cancer. A perfect addition to dessert!
  5. Beets: These roots are loaded with nutrition like fiber and betalains that are antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Look for them roasted with the veggies, or raw on salads. They’re a gorgeous color and delicious, so they’re a great pot-luck contribution as well.
  6. Eggs: Who doesn’t love a good deviled egg? Go easy on the mayonnaise-heavy treats, but these little indulgences are also full of zinc, iron, and choline that can support your neurological systems and actually move cholesterol out of your bloodstream.
  7. Honey and Mustard: Opt for the honey-mustard dressing for a double whammy of nutrition! Mustard provides the selenium, which has been shown to boost your immune system, protect against cancer and even prevent heart disease. Honey has been proven to be both antimicrobial and antioxidant, helping prevent cancer and fight disease.
  8. Broccoli: This superfood is packed full of vitamin C, fiber, beta-carotene and sulforaphane, which helps you fight infections, improve skin health, and even prevent cancer. Munch on it raw, or search it out in casseroles or side dishes, to give yourself and indulgent-feeling nutrition-punch.
  9. Chilis: Don’t shy away from these spicy additions! The spicy source, called capsaicin, can fight heart disease and stroke. Plus, they can provide relief from congestion and boost your metabolism. So opt for peppers as spicy as you like, and enjoy!

Knowing how to choose foods wisely means that you can find nutrition even at the ubiquitous holiday parties.

In keeping nutrition a priority, don’t get too stressed. Stress is an inhibitor to health, so just make the best choices available and be sure to enjoy and socialize!
