(Not Too) Scary Halloween Snacks

Halloween is fast-approaching, which means parties, pumpkin patches and trick-or-treating. If you’re not careful, these events can lead to serious sugar overload!

Don’t despair… you don’t have to sacrifice fun for health.  Here are a few tasty treats that are so cute and delicious, no one will miss the extra sugar.

Whip up a batch of these festive favorites for your child’s class party, take them to the neighbor’s costume party or keep them on hand for a healthful alternative when temptation strikes.

Booo-ti-ful Banana Ghosts

  • 6 bananas, peeled and sliced in half crosswise
  • 16 oz vanilla yogurt (optional)
  • 24 small raisins or chocolate chips
  • 12 popsicle sticks

Carefully insert one popsicle stick into the cut end of each banana. Optional step: Dip each banana in yogurt to coat, or apply yogurt to all sides of the banana using a pastry brush. Place coated bananas on a large plate covered with waxed paper or on a non-stick baking sheet. Lightly press two raisins or chocolate chips into each banana to resemble eyes and mouth. Freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  • 1 bag of clementines
  • 1 green bell pepper or celery

Vampire Stakes

  • 1 cantelope, cubed
  • 1 pound of backberries or black grapes
  • Wooden skewers

Thread melon onto skewers, alternating with berries/grapes. Create as many as you’d like, adjusting the amount of cantelope and grapes on each skewer to ensure you end up with as many stakes as you need. Help small children eat their stakes by removing the pieces from the skewer for them. Safely discard skewers immediately.
